7 New Ideas for Your Next Vacation

Apr 3rd, 2011 Kate Rivers

Vacations are your time to explore life from a new perspective. Even if your vacation budget can only fund a short road trip, you can still use the time to get out of your comfort zone and experience new things. You might be looking forward to spending time in the spa or relaxing by the pool, but why not dedicate at least one afternoon to something different? Isn't that what vacations are for? Here are some ideas to spark your imagination:

Get your blood flowing

Exercise is good for the body and soul. Any vacation destination will have some type of physical activity available, even if it's swimming hard laps in the pool or running on the treadmill for an hour. Don't fall to the excuse that you want to relax on your vacation, because you'll actually feel more relaxed after a moderately strenuous workout. Consider mountain biking, kayaking, rafting, water skiing, snow skiing, or even bowling or golfing.

Try a new food

Ideally, you would set out to eat the destination's local specialty like, clam chowder in New England or fried ravioli in St. Louis. But if your vacation destination does not have its own famous dish, settle for trying a food you've never eaten before. Order brussel sprouts on the side or baked Alaska for dessert. Or have a chocolate martini. The key here is not to get upset if you don't like it. Remember, it's the experience of trying something new that's fun.

Get lost

Hop in your car and start driving. You might see a local shop that looks interesting, or the working class side of your vacation destination. Or you might see miles and miles of the same old, same old. But then at least you know what you want to see more of, and what you've seen enough of.

Use two wheels instead of four

Skip the rental car or taxi cab and get a scooter, motorcycle, or bicycle instead. The scenery looks more alive when you aren't enclosed in a vehicle's cabin.

Talk to the locals

Get outside the tourist area of your destination and spark up a conversation with a local. Ask her where the locals eat and go for fun. If you have time, follow the advice you get. Local favorites, particularly the restaurants, can often be cheaper and better than their tourist-oriented counterparts.

Take a lesson

Pick up a new skill while you're on vacation by taking a class or lesson. Ideas include cooking, dancing, tennis, golf, or even something a little saucy, like stripping.

Test your fear of heights

Hike to the top of a mountain, try ziplining, take a sky-diving lesson, ride a roller coaster, or book a hotel with a rooftop pool. Even if you aren't scared of heights, you're bound to be invigorated by the view from up above.
