How To Make Claims With Travel Insurance
People who are travelling take up travel insurance policy and tend to be carefree. However, they do not understand the exact nature of this travel insurance policy unless they lose something valuable.
Then, when they read the rules of the holiday insurance policy or when the insurer points them out, one realizes the cost of remaining carefree. Actually, though the travel insurance policy promises benefits through a standard terms and conditions, yet there are some important points mentioned in the fine print and one has to understand them before buying the holiday insurance policy.
Firstly, in a journey one can lose a camera or a laptop and one may believe that one can claim it back through the travel insurance. However, this cannot be so easy because the travel insurance policy document clearly mentions certain conditions under which the claim can be accepted. The insurance companies also expect that the insured people are able to take care of their belongings in the same manner as they would if they had not been insured.
Under the terms and conditions of the holiday insurance policy, the insured person has to take care of the belongings and if they are lost, he needs to give an explanation as how the item got lost or stolen.
If the item was found to be placed in open area where anybody could just pick it up, it clearly means that the owner was not careful about it. The insurance company also expects the insured people to keep their belongings in locked cabins. If the belongings are left attended and if they have been stolen, the insurer may refuse to accept the claim.
Only belongings that have gone missing in spite of keeping them safely locked in the hotel room or in a locker, then the insurance company would accept the claim and pay back the amount lost by the person. Another important point of the travel insurance is that the insurance company generally fixes a certain amount of money for reimbursement against a loss of an item. If the item is quite expensive, the insured person cannot claim for the full amount if it is lost.
The item though expensive such as a electronic equipment or even jewelry cannot be claimed to its full amount by the insured person because the insurance company has fixed a limited amount for any claim. Beyond that amount, no item can be filed for claim though its original cost is higher. This is usually a general part of the terms and conditions.
But some holiday insurance companies offer special insurance packages for items that are expensive. These items need to be insured separately and possibly even at a higher rate of the premium compared to the normal travel insurance.
Even these insurance packages have terms and conditions and one should be clear about them. However, getting insured for anything that is more valuable than any other usual items one carries while traveling is a good idea and it can be part of the travel plan as well.
